BRAND NOTE - THE EAST14 STORY

EAST14 is a contemporary womenswear label by Valerie Namita. The brand was conceptualised in the cafes and classrooms located at East14th street In NYC where the designer lived and studied. Hence it is named after that special place where it all first started.

As an opinionated, slow fashion, we believe in mindfully creating our clothes via our use of sustainable fabrics, minimal and zero waste pattern cutting techniques and ethical business practices.

With minimalism as its core philosophy, we don’t do seasons and believe in creating timeless classic pieces. In this post Pandemic world, we want to change the way we overproduce and overconsume in fashion. Our goal is to empower the artisan and create timeless pieces that outlast trends, seasons and runways.

COLLECTION NOTE

My debut collection named ‘Kintsukuroi’, a bit of an accidental inspiration works on the principals of the  Japanese art of Kintsugi. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of putting broken pottery pieces back together with gold — a metaphor for embracing your flaws and imperfections.

“You won't realize your full potential until you go through the tough times,” Kumai says. “All beautiful things carry distinctions of imperfection. Your wounds and imperfections are your beauty. Like the broken pottery mended with gold, we are all Kintsugi.” Its philosophy and art state that breakage and mending are honest parts of a past.

Inspired from this ancient art from, we try to create minimal waste patterns with the interplay of leftover or excess fabric by combining them together using biodegradable Raffia threads. We recreate fabric waste and leftover scraps into something beautiful. Our artisans masterfully paint with threads using traditional thread work techniques to create our signature impressionistic embroideries creating minimal, geometric, sustainable designs with complex drapes. Our goal is to empower the artisan and create timeless pieces that outlast trends, seasons and runways.
